Buried Asset Verification
Quality Level A of the ASCE standards provides the most information to the client of all the levels presented within the standard. Vacuum excavation is employed to safely expose known and unknown buried objects providing an exact location and the positive identification of the buried objects. This level provides for the visual verification and measurement of precise horizontal and vertical positions of utilities.
Vacuum Excavation Procedures:
Vacuum excavation is a non-destructive method for obtaining detailed information on underground utilities. This method provides size, configuration, condition, horizontal alignment & vertical elevation of the buried objects. The process by which an area or point is vacuum excavated are as follows:
1. The area or point is defined by the client or is identified using non-intrusive means such as the use of ground penetrating radar and/or conductive electromagnetic devices.
2. In grassed areas, block out grass using a shovel and set aside the sod to be replaced upon completion of vacuum excavation. In areas that are in asphalt or concrete, cut a square large enough that it would allow for proper vacuum excavation.
3. Upon completion of vacuum excavation verification, return the area or point vacuum excavated back to original condition as best as possible unless otherwise directed by the contract with the client.
4. Annotate specific details of the findings on the prints or GPS and enter the information within the database depending on the services to be provided.
